The area was once established, as the eastern part of the historic region of Bengal, along with what is currently the Indian area of western Bengal, the Bengal region of British India. The division of India in 1947 converted it into the Pakistani East Bengali zone (subsequently called East Pakistan), one of Pakistan's five regions separated from the other four by 1,100 miles (1,800 kilometres) of the Indian region. In the winter months, the temperatures are higher than in the summer months, from November to March. The coolest month is January, with an average of high temperatures in the mid to high 70s F (20 C).
